Don't let Barriers to
Effective Communication ruin your marriage.
The basis of a healthy marriage is good communication, which
means being able to handle the information our partners share
with us. It is finding common ground with each other. It
means allowing our partner to be themselves and to be able
to be ourselves in the marriage.
THIS ALL SOUNDS GREAT, BUT HOW DO I GET FROM WHERE I AM TO
WHERE I WANT TO BE IN THIS
MARRIAGE?
5 Effective
Communication Tips you can apply to help
improve your marriage today:
1. Be respectful –
Mind your Ps and Qs. Start saying “please” and “thank you”.
This is subtle but very effective.
2. Ask for what you
want – Don’t assume that your partner can read
your mind – often they are clueless!
Ask kindly and let your partner know what you need. For
example, if you need a break from the kids, say “I really need
a break from the kids, would you mind taking care of them for
30 minutes while I catch my breath? I am going to go out for a
walk to calm my nerves”, Instead of, “Can’t you help? Can’t you
see how stressed out I am?!!” Can you feel the difference?
Which statement is more likely to get a response?
3. Talk About Something
Fun - At the end of the day, when you get home
from work or your spouse gets home from work, take 10 minutes
to just sit down and talk about a very low stress subject.
Remember something funny or something inspiring that happened
in your day and share it with your spouse. This is a great ice
breaker. It keeps things light and diffuses stress.
4. Ask your husband or wife about
something that matters to them - For example, you
can ask your husband what he thought of the ball game or your
wife how her friend’s baby shower went or whatever else you
know is important to your partner. This encourages them to
share their feelings without being pressured. Then really pay
attention to what your partner is saying. You will begin to
learn how your partner feels and thinks.
5. Stay positive -
Learn to see the positive in the things around you. There is
always a bright side to anything if you look hard
enough. Focusing on the positive instead of the negative allows
you to maintain a positive attitude with your husband or wife.
In your conversation, start sharing the positive perspective
instead of the negative perspective with your spouse. This is
very powerful. It encourages more communication and allows a
relationship to grow.
By applying these simple techniques, barriers to
effective communication with your husband or wife will no
longer be an issue. Try it and see how your marriage
transforms before your very eyes!!
